UK Russia sanctions latest: Vladimir Putin and Sergey Lavrov directly hit over Ukraine war | Politics | News
The Prime Minister told NATO leaders during an emergency call this afternoon the UK would take immediate action against the Russian dictator and Sergey Lavrov. It comes after the EU announced similar measures this afternoon, with the West continuing to try and present a unified response to the aggression being inflicted by Moscow on Ukraine. Mr Johnson warned leaders that “President Putin was engaging in a revanchist mission to over-turn post-Cold War order” and his ambitions likely extended beyond Ukraine, as he urged for leaders to go further with the sanctions they were implementing. The Prime Minister has been pushing hard to get European nations to agree to cut off Russia from the Swift banking system that would limit the country’s ability to receive transactions. A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “The Prime Minister urged leaders to take immediate action against Swift to inflict maximum pain on President Putin and his regime. “The UK would introduce sanctions against President Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov imminently, on top of the sanctions package the UK announced yesterday.” READ MORE ON OUR RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR LIVE BLOG
Speaking after the NATO call, the organisation’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, said: “We must stand ready to do more, even if it means we have to pay a price, because we are in this for the long haul.”

He added: “We are facing a new normal in European security where Russia openly contests the European security order and uses force to pursue its objectives.”
UK sanctions against Russia have been hatcheted up on a day by day basis so far.
Today’s sanctions against Putin and Lavrov come after 10 sets of sanctions – described by Mr Johnson as the “largest and most severe package of economic sanctions that Russia has ever seen” – were placed on Russian individuals and businesses last night.
Aeroflot, the largest airline of the Russian Federation, was immediately banned from landing in the UK and an asset freeze come into effect on all major Russian banks, including immediately against VTB.
The UK Government is now exerting pressure on the oil and gas company BP to cut its ties with Russian oil giant Rosneft.
The British-based company holds a 20 percent stake in the firm.
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng held a virtual call with BP’s chief executive Bernard Looney for around 20 minutes on Friday to discuss the company’s position.
A Whitehall source told the PA news agency: “BP left the meeting with no doubt about the strength of the Business Secretary’s concern about their commercial interests in Russia.”
Oil giant BP admitted last year that sanctions on Russia could be problematic for its business, as global leaders are lining up to impose an even more stringent economic retaliation against the Kremlin.
The 8 Best Self-Tanning Products That Won’t Streak or Smell
Fun fact: I never even picked up a self-tanning product until I was well into my twenties. They always seemed fussy and complicated to me, and I never thought I needed them—that is until I booked my first spray tan. I was asked to do it as research for a story I was writing, and even though I was scared I’d look orange and unnatural, I went for it in the name of beauty journalism. When I left and caught a glimpse of myself in my car mirror, I was shocked. The tan looked incredibly natural and even, and instead of looking like I just had a spray tan, I looked healthy and radiant. It quickly occurred to me that I wanted to look like that all the time. It also occurred to me that I could probably achieve a similar result at home with the help of self-tanning products. So, I opened up Pandora’s Box and began testing a variety of formulas. Some worked, some didn’t, but along the way, I learned two things—I can’t stand streaks, and I can’t stand the smell of dihydroxyacetone (this is the active ingredient in self-tanners). Luckily, after a few years of trial and error, I came across a select few formulas that check all the boxes. They don’t look orange and unnatural, they don’t streak, and they don’t smell as strongly as other traditional self-tanning products. Keep scrolling to see all 8.
Meghan Markle beauty transformation: Duchess ‘appears more demure & less LA’ expert says
Meghan Markle subtly changed her appearance when she joined the Royal Family, and since leaving them as a senior member alongside Prince Harry, her style has shifted once more. Express.co.uk spoke to Dr Ross Perry, the Medical Director of Cosmedics skin clinics about the Duchess of Sussex’s beauty transformation. No matter where Meghan is, the paparazzi follow, and every picture of her shows glowing skin. Dr Ross believes there is “no doubt” Meghan “drinks plenty of water to keep her skin hydrated”, and this can” help combat any acne flare ups”. “Drinking plenty of water also facilitates the flow of nutrients through the blood,” he added. In terms of what products Meghan might use to keep her skin clear, the expert said: “Meghan will likely be using a gentle cleanser on her face twice a day which will be fragrance free as harsher versions are more likely to irritate the skin and make you more prone to acne flare ups and dryness. READ MORE: Houseplants: Expert’s unusual household remedy to kill mouldy soil “I would suspect Meghan has had a cleanser specially formulated to suit her skin type.” Moisturisers are part of almost everyone’s routine, and Dr Ross thinks the Duchess “would have been advised by her skincare guru to use a light moisturiser containing only natural products which should be applied after a shower or bath when pores are most open and able to absorb the moisturiser”. “It’s best to avoid having the water too hot or any steam treatments as it strips the body of natural oils,” he continued. “Meghan may well be using a humidifier at night which helps with skin hydration.” As for what Dr Ross’ advice is for anyone looking to use moisturisers, he revealed: ““Avoid oil-based moisturisers as they can make skin more greasy and block pores.” In terms of what skincare treatments Meghan might get, Dr Ross commented: “I would suggest that alongside a really good skincare routine, drinking plenty of water and eating a well-balanced diet, she likely opts for oxygen facial which tend to be favoured by celebrity mums to be as they contain fantastic ingredients such as vitamins, antioxidants and botanical extracts which are delivered via a stream of steam.

Food Recall: Dunnes Stores recalls popular snack due to health risks – ‘do not consume’
Food recalls are issued when there has been a discovery of a safety issue or defect with a product, which may result in unintentional harm to the consumer. The product affected is the 275g pack size with a use by date of January 14, 2022. The Food Standards Agency issued a risk statement, saying: “This product may contain sulphur dioxide, making it a possible health risk for anyone with a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.” According to the Centre for Food Safety, sulphur dioxide is “a preservative commonly used in a variety of foods and beverages including dried fruits, pickled vegetables, sausages, fruit and vegetable juices, cider, vinegar and wine.” It added: “Sulphur residues in food are considered to have low toxicity. However, it may induce allergic reactions such as asthmatic attacks, headache and nausea in susceptible individuals.”
DON’T MISS “Individuals sensitive to sulphur dioxide should read food labels carefully every time when shopping for food and look for the names of sulphur dioxide, sulphites and sulphite derivatives or their International Numbering System numbers (220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, 227 and 228) on the ingredient list, and avoid all food products containing these compounds.” The Food Standards Agency stated: “Dunnes Stores is recalling the above product from customers and has been advised to contact the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. “The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers. These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.” They then offered advice to customers: “If you have bought the above product and have a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.” “Consumers who are allergic or intolerant to Sulphur Dioxide or Sulphites, do not consume the affected product, instead return it to your nearest Dunnes Stores where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.” They continued: “We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.”
Putin dealt huge £3bn blow as ANOTHER energy giant slashes ties with Russia | Science | News
The company announced it will stop managing the huge oil and gas production sites on Sakhalin Island in the east of Russia. It comes after several other energy giants, including British companies Shell and BP, have also slashed ties with Russia. Exxon said in a statement: “We deplore Russia’s military action that violates the territorial integrity of Ukraine and endangers its people. Now, plans for a new major liquified natural gas (LNG) plant on the island look to be in jeopardy. Another massive LNG project on the island, Sakhalin-2, was dealt a huge blow well Shell pulled out of the joint-venture. The energy giant had a 27.5 percent stake in the project. But this is just one of several projects that are in a crisis as billions of funds slip out of Russia’s grip. Shell is also ditching its 50 percent stake in the Salym Petroleum Development and the Gydan energy venture. Exxon, while not holding as large a stake in Russia’s energy empire, does operate three large offshore oil and gas fields. It also planned to add a new LNG export terminal to the site.
Anish Kapadia, from Pallissy Advisors, said: “Exxon’s Russian business is relatively small in the context of its wider enterprise, so it does not have the same significance as it has to BP or TotalEnergies, if it were to abandon its Russian assets.” But given that it is joining a long list of companies that have slashed ties with Russia, this will no doubt come at a huge cost to Russia’s energy sector. READ MORE: Putin’s nuclear threat to UK: Nine locations that could be obliterated Shell’s chief executive officer, Ben van Beurden, said in a statement: “We are shocked by the loss of life in Ukraine, which we deplore, resulting from a senseless act of military aggression which threatens European security. “Our decision to exit is one we take with conviction. We cannot — and we will not — stand by. Our immediate focus is the safety of our people in Ukraine and supporting our people in Russia.” This also comes as Europe looks to slash its dependency on Russian gas. The bloc is largely reliant on Russia for its gas, with its exports accounting for 40 percent of its total supplies. And Russia’s Ukraine invasion has sparked fears its gas could get slashed in response to sanctions slapped down on the energy sector. The EU’s Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson, has described the bloc’s energy situation as “tense”. But she has claimed that EU would be able to get through the winter even if Russia slashes all its supplies.
